Three years after their breakout Travelling Without Moving, Jamiroquai
returned with another album that charts Jay Kay’s continuing fascination with
club-bound music of the 1970s — from disco to jazz-funk to rare groove to
later Motown — but also shows signs of maturity. Produced by Kay with Al
Stone, who also collaborated on Travelling Without Moving, the album includes
several tracks (like the single “Canned Heat”) that work infectious acid jazz
grooves, and Kay’s hipster vocals give out feel-good vibes through a set of
ambiguously good-time lyrics. Though other tracks show a bit of an electronica
update to the affairs, each still spotlights how strong and tight the band is.
It may not be a leap ahead in sound, but Synkronized is another solid
Jamiroquai record.

Michael McDonald never disguises what his seventh solo album is:
the title Motown makes it clear that this 2003 effort is a tribute
to the glory days of Berry Gordy’s Detroit empire. McDonald never
strays too far from that thesis, occasionally dipping into the
late ’70s for material (he takes on Marvin Gaye’s “I Want You”)
and sometimes choosing to wax relatively obscure items from
Motown’s vast, rich catalog, but for the most part, this is
devoted to the songs that you know by heart, whether you were a
kid in the ’60s or raised on oldies radio. Since this is McDonald,
not a neo-soul neophyte, this is cleanly and sharply produced,
relying heavily on synthesizers, drum machines, and professional
vocalists, but anybody who has spent any time with his solo
records will find this not to be objectionable, but par for the
course. If McDonald doesn’t reinvent these songs — hell, he uses
the original arrangements as a blueprint, then cleans them up —
he does display a love and reverence for the work, and his singing
is passionate throughout. Ultimately, Motown doesn’t add much to
his discography, but for those who love McDonald and Motown in
equal measures, it’s a fine listen.

The Best of KC and the Sunshine Band was a compilation album by KC
& The Sunshine Band, first released in 1990. The album contained
hits from 1974-1979 including every track included in their 1980
Greatest Hits compilation (which had gone out of print), along
with their top 20 1983 hit “Give It Up” and other moderately-
successful singles.

From 1974-1979, KC & the Sunshine Band were one of the most
popular R&B/pop acts and writers of the era. The Best of KC & the
Sunshine Band covers the high points of the band’s production team
of keyboardist/vocalist Harry Wayne “K.C.” Casey and quirky
bassist Richard Finch. The earliest tracks, “Queen of Clubs” and
“Sound Your Funky Horn,” are good but not great glossy, heavily
produced R&B. The list of hits here is impressive whether looking
from a straight-up R&B standpoint or early R&B-based disco. “Get
Down Tonight” and “That’s the Way I Like It,” in fact, are the
perfect examples of what happened in dance-based music. Tracks
from the band’s best album, Part 3, rightfully get a lot of slots
here. Essential offerings like “I’m Your Boogie Man,” “Wrap Your
Arms Around Me,” “I Like to Do It,” and “(Shake, Shake, Shake)
Shake Your Booty” display the band as a tireless polyrhythmic
machine. The brilliant “Keep It Comin’ Love” arguably bests them
all. This best-of also includes later tracks, including the
raucous and flashy “Do You Wanna Go Party” and the sweeping ballad
“Please Don’t Go.” Although this best-of is more thorough than
most, fans might notice a few omissions. “I Get Lifted” and their
so-bad-it’s-good cover of the Four Tops’ classic “It’s the Same
Old Song” didn’t make the cut. The Best of KC & the Sunshine Band
is an excellent overview and proves that the band was indeed
closer to R&B than they ever were to disco.
